Flock History

Started in 1957 with the purchase of 3 ewes in the Lakefield Farm Dispersal Sale, Wheaton Hampshire’s has gained a national reputation for both frame and club lamb type of Hampshire’s. Since that time many things have changed, however our dedication to breeding top quality purebred livestock has remained the focus in our program.

Even though we raise both purebred frame sheep and club lamb sheep our dedication is equally dispersed and our goals are the same.

Although we have raised purebred breeding stock
since the mid-50s we expanded out flock in 1989 and got more actively involved in the wether side of the industry. It was then we purchased our first ram from Cabaniss Hampshire’s ( “Star”: An 801 son ) and started our wether flock by breeding “Star” to our tall fronted, angular, straight lined frame sheep. This cross didn’t yield a large number of top-end wethers, however it did produce a strong foundation of females that have been the catalyst in our program. We believe this cross has given us a competitive advantage because of the added growth, style and unique female base. We have maintained to build our wether-style sheep from selecting off the female end and are dedicated to the production of sound, muscular wether’s and breeding stock that are stylish.

All of our success comes from our families’ dedication and hard work to raise sheep we like by selecting superior stud rams and mate them to large framed females that have muscle, correctness, superior breed type and style. We have long recognized that both the frame and Club Lamb type sheep produce valuable Sheep that possess these traits.

We are very fortunate that our flock of Hampshire’s has provided our family with opportunities to meet many great people. In so many ways the “sheep business is the people business”. The relationships formed and the friendships that come while competing with people of like interest is what makes the purebred livestock industry the great family-building experience that it is.
